“We’ve all fought hard to keep this incredible business intact but must concede that time has run out, and now we must do what’s best to preserve as many jobs as possible, for as long as is possible, by working with our appointed administrators.”

Mark Jackson, CEO Wilko

Is Bed, Bath & Beyond-ed a verb? Founded as Wilkinson Cash Store in Leicester in 1930, British retailer Wilko collapsed into administration yesterday. Its roots in hardware, the chain’s growth was juiced in the 1950s by the advent of Do-It-Yourself. In time, its stores began carrying everything from sweets to stationery to shams. But it struggled to stock its shelves during the pandemic. Inflation then consumed what was left of its cash stash. Nada Abbas, 23, is a postgraduate student at Manchester University who was interviewed by the Manchester Evening News to gauge reaction to the announced insolvency. “I don’t think I know another store that sells the things Wilkos does at that price. I had gotten bed sheets, mops, cups, and just basic stuff for my flat from there and it was way cheaper than I thought. I would go to IKEA but Wilkos was much closer and just more convenient.”

As is the case with so many dying retailers, being successful at both brick & mortar and online was too great of an operational feat. Closer to home, retailers with an eye to building an e-commerce platform will find it’s much more economical to do so compared to a year ago. As diplomatically noted by the Logistics Managers’ Index (LMI), “While costs may be higher than they would like, firms interested in restocking should have an easier time finding storage space than they would have a year ago.”
