“It was never if, just when.”
American tennis player Sloane Stephens tweeted this on Saturday morning after her good friend and compatriot Madison Keys won the Australian Open, upsetting two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 6-3 2-6 7-5. The victory marked Keys’ first at a Grand Slam, one of the four most prestigious tournaments that a tennis player can win. The sole other time Keys had reached a major final was at the 2017 U.S. Open, where it was her pal Sloane Stephens who bested her. This time around, eight years later and on the other side of the world, she refused to be relegated to runner-up status. Though just 29, Keys is something of a late bloomer in the tennis world. She turned pro at 14, and her win in Melbourne makes her the third oldest woman to win her first Grand Slam title. We hope her well-deserved victory—capped with a monster forehand winner—tastes as good as the glass of champagne she drank during her post-match press conference.
Speaking of champagne, the final January data from the University of Michigan suggests the wealthiest Americans (the ones whose spending drives consumption) may be ready to take a bubbly break.
