The Daily Feather — From Marshall County to Member’s Mark
The littles are home from the land of corn. Dairies serving Marshall County, where Culver calls home, experience a two-week lull between graduation festivities and the kickoff for the six-week summer camp program founded in 1902, eight years after what locals call “winter school.” Back then, the milkman would know when students returned home, as deliveries to homes jumped. In my case, Tom Thumb sees its revenues jump as the twins drink a gallon of milk every other day. This past weekend’s annual ritual of restocking the fridge and pantry landed us first at Sam’s Club, Walmart’s biggest-box retailer. Member’s Mark product offerings have exploded. The challenge to save households money has, for example, manifested as private label vitamin water. Rather than Tom Thumb’s individual bottle price of $1.79, a Member’s Mark knock-off 24-pack sells for $13.48, or 56 cents a bottle. As for the milk, in addition to Tom Thumb’s digital coupon, which cut the cost per gallon to $2.87, there was the rare sighting of gallons expiring June 10th with 50% off stickers.
In sum, grocery prices were the lowest we’ve seen in years.
